  17. <p>    Four years ago, the world watched anxiously as TWA Flight
  18. 847 sat on a runway in Beirut airport and 39 American passengers
  19. were held hostage for 17 days by gunslinging hijackers. Among
  20. the most horrifying images in the intense TV coverage: the body
  21. of U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem, 23, being dumped onto the
  22. tarmac. Last week, after a ten-month trial, a Frankfurt court
  23. sentenced Lebanese-born Mohammed Ali Hammadi, 24, to life in
  24. prison for his role in the hijacking and Stethem's murder.
  25. Unable to determine whether Stethem was shot by Hammadi or a
  26. second hijacker, still at large, the court ruled that Hammadi
  27. was accountable as an accomplice.

  29. <p>    Hammadi, who is linked to the radical pro-Iranian group
  30. Hizballah, was arrested in January 1987 while trying to smuggle
  31. explosives through Frankfurt airport. West Germany denied a
  32. U.S. extradition request after Hammadi backers kidnaped two
  33. German businessmen in Lebanon, prompting criticism that Bonn was
  34. knuckling under to blackmail. Hammadi could have faced the death
  35. penalty in the U.S., not an option in Germany. Said Stethem's
  36. father Richard: Hammadi "deserves punishment more severe than
  37. allowable under German law."
